When we meet together for
worship we express our thanks for the uplifting and
joyous experiences of life; we assert our belief that there is meaning in the
Universe: that our ideals are not delusions; we confess our failure to live up to our
highest ideals of goodness, truth and beauty; we make resolutions to serve these ideals more
faithfully in the days to come; and above all, we look to strengthen our faith and to deepen our
knowledge, wisdom and love, that we may live better
lives. (adapted from the former Trim Street Unitarian Chapel, Bath).

Unitarians are descendants of English Presbyterians, who valued learning, openness to new ideas and tolerance in matters of faith more than attachments to dogma. Present day Unitarians emphasise their freedom of belief and a concern for all that leads to harmony with others and the world.

The traditions and principles of our Christian heritage are central to the Unitarian ethos, but there are no defined creeds, truths or beliefs, each person being encouraged to think for themselves. Worship can embrace Biblical, other spiritual, and secular themes, through which we may explore and celebrate the wonder and mystery of all life and creation, consider awareness of God, and seek inspiration to guide our thoughts, words and actions.

Unitarians believe that no religion holds the
monopoly on truth. They encourage people to seek their own truth and
explore the limits of their own belief. They endeavour to meet the
spiritual needs of individuals in the context of a loving community, and
encourage the fulfilment of all human potential.

As Unitarians the principles of freedom, reason and tolerance are important to us in the quest for truth, searching together as we do for purpose and meaning in life. Thus we are committed to civil and religious liberty for every individual.
We recognise that religion is wider than any sect and deeper than any set of opinions. Change is an essential element in our liberal religion, and we welcome the challenge of new ideas.

We meet together not for schismatical or heretical separation, not as a
source of bigotry and superstition, but for principles quite the
reverse: for promoting pure religion, the glory of God, and the
happiness of humankind (adapted from the Foundation Stone of 1752)

There are many people who cannot accept religious dogma. Yet they have a faith - arising from experience - which longs to be acknowledged and strengthened. Unitarians are such people. Many people are Unitarians without ever having heard of the Unitarian Church. Perhaps you are one.
It is a Church which recognises the deeply personal nature of belief. It holds that, while no one knows what God is, this need not commit us to a secular society. Also, that there are many sources of truth and that belief may change over time.
